Cosmetic surgery is a very common procedure that offers many meaningful benefits to patients, but it also carries a high risk of serious complications. Sometimes, patients don't know all the risks. This can cause great stress. There are inherent risks to surgery as it is an invasive procedure. Some risks are greater than others.
Vicarious experience

Self-rated attractiveness
A study was done to determine if adolescents' self-rated physical attractiveness correlates with their psychological well-being. Participants were asked about their self-reported levels and physical attractiveness. Results showed that male adolescents were more attractive than female peers. However, girls were more likely to experience internalized distress if their self-rated attractiveness was negative. These associations reached statistical significance for girls only, and were not related to suicide ideation or self-harmed behaviors.
Religiousness
A new study found that religion has a significant impact on whether people are open to cosmetic surgery. Specifically, individuals who are more religious were less likely to have cosmetic surgery than nonreligious individuals. It is still unclear if there is a relationship between religion and the risks of cosmetic surgery.
Household income
This study showed a strong correlation between household incomes as well as the risk of having cosmetic surgery. The study found that people with higher incomes were more likely to have the procedure than those who had lower incomes. The Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics was used to measure gross household income by the researchers. This method is widely accepted and has been proven to show health disparities between different socioeconomic groups.
Liquid silicone facial injections
Although liquid silicone injections are very popular for cosmetic surgery, there are some risks. Some patients may experience temporary bruising or swelling. Some patients may experience serious complications, such as inflammatory reactions. Liquid silicone injections can also migrate to other parts of the body and cause permanent damage. In extreme cases, the treatment can even result in a heart attack.
Infections
Patients who have had cosmetic surgery can become infected. Although they are very rare, infections can still happen even with antibacterial medications. There are many microorganisms that can cause infections. Most often, they are caused mostly by Staphylococci/Streptococci. But, there have been reports of infections by non-tuberculous mecobacteria. These infections are difficult to detect using standard gram staining, and may be resistant to most antibacterial drugs.
